This Month's Mentee News Update

Please read about our newest mentees, three nonprofit organizations, and let us know if you have a connection or resource that might be helpful to their growth and development.

Bruce Harper: Heroes and Cool Kids
Many of you met Bruce Harper at our event in March. A former Jets football player, he founded the Heroes and Cool Kids organization 14 years ago to foster smart choices among middle schoolers. High school student athletes and leaders are trained by former pro athletes and individuals in sports-related industries to mentor middle school students on important life skills, including sportsmanship, conflict resolution and positive lifestyle choices. Then these high school mentors go on to speak with the younger students three times each year. The program has been successful as the younger students look up to their high school mentors as role models, thus creating a positive impact on the older students as well. The program is currently in 57 schools in NJ and Westchester County NY.  BAF will work with Bruce and his staff and board to strategize and plan for growth. If you are interested in bringing this program to your school or camp, contact BAF.

Amie Hamlin, The New York Coalition for Healthy School Food
Amie (pictured center, with NYState's former first lady and Senator Gillibrand) started her non-profit organization to introduce healthy food options to schools. The program develops delicious plant-based recipes and introduces them to students in the classroom setting before offering them in the school cafeteria.  Currently in 15 NYC schools, the paid staff and volunteers facilitate these nutrition education programs, including family activities as well. BAF is gathering a think tank team to help them develop a strategic plan for steady growth that will include increasing corporate sponsors and funding support.

Beth Rosenthal: It's Just Benign
Beth's diagnosis of a brain tumor in 1985 changed her life. Though the tumor was benign, after surgery and radiation she was left with side-effects. Beth wished she could discuss her questions with other patients but found nothing online to help. She now has started an online resource: www.itsjustbenign.org where she offers information, support, and a means of communication for those diagnosed with benign brain tumors. BAF will be working with Beth to help her grow the organization.
